Sohail's Gmail Notifier for Google Apps Fixed for Windows 7

New version of Sohail's Notifier for Google Apps have been released.I have named it version 3.0. Both notifiers (single account & multiple account) now fully support Windows 7 and mailto links. No manual registry key changes required for mailto links or default browser settings on Windows 7.

The new version should handle mailto links correctly on all versions of Windows. Previously, few users were getting error while setting their default browser for Gmail. This bug has also been fixed. Version 3.0 of Gmail Notifier should automatically detect the default browser of the Windows. It supports Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera & Safari. Other browsers have not been tested but they all should work.

Also, if Gmail Notifier does not detect the browser automatically, there is an option to select the path of .exe file of any browser.

Version 3.0 of Gmail Notifier can also be run by standard PC users, previously only administrators were allowed to run the notifier.

Known bugs:

Current version of notifier does not work with Guest accounts.

Windows 7 Mailto & Autologin bug fixed with Gmail Notifier (Multi)

Sohai's Gmail Notifier would not auto-fill login details anymore in the url. You can download the latest version of multiple accounts notifier from our downloads page.

Gmail notifier used to show a registry error in Windows 7 when you try to set it to handle mailto links. This bug should also be fixed. Please let me know if you find any problems and I will fix them ASAP.

Thank you all for your requests and suggestions. I have implemented some of them in this version. I will keep adding new features in it.

Running Sohail's Gmail Notifier for Google Apps in Windows 7

All of you who are currently having problems running Google Apps notifier on Windows 7, please try to run it in Vista compatible mode and it should work fine.

I will fix this problem as soon as Micorosft releases Windows 7 officially.

Dealing with the User Account Control prompts

Note: When running the steps below, the user MUST have administrator privelages

Click the Start menu and type in "task" (without the quotes) in the search box (click "continue" if prompted)

On the right-hand side of the Task Scheduler, click "Create Task"

On the General Tab, type a name to identify your task - such as "Gmail Notifier"

[IMPORTANT] Check the "Run with highest privileges" check box

Click the "Triggers" tab, click "New"

Select "At log on" from the "Begin task" drop-down and click "OK"

Click the "Actions" tab, click "New"

Leave the "Action" drop-down set to "Start a Program"

Click "Browse" and find the Gmail Notifier Application (C:\Program Files (x86)\GmailNotifier.Net\Sohail's Gmail Notifier for Google Apps (Pro)\GmailNotifier.exe)
Click "OK"

Click "OK" to save the task

Your program should now run any time you log in, and with full permissions and without any annoying Vista prompts!

Gmail Notifier for Google Apps (Multiple accounts) Pro released!

Thanks for waiting. Today i have release the professional version of Sohail's Gmail Notifier for Google Apps.

Following bugs found in beta version has been fixed.

1) Icon is always green even when there are no unread emails in any of account.
Now It should change color to green only when there is unread emails

2) The tool tip that shows when hover mouse over the icon always says "Checking mail..."
Now tooltip should show the total number of unread emails in all accounts.

Following suggestion has been implemented

1) It would be great if when I double-clicked on the icon it would take me to the first account's inbox that has unread mail. If none of them have unread mail it should take me to the first one in the list.

Here is a quick review of new features added in multiple accounts notifier which were not present in single account notifier.

New Features

This version supports multiple Google apps email accounts notification.
Currently, notifier supports 10 Google Apps accounts
Finally, i have added the auto login support in Gmail Notifier. Now you do not need to type in your username and password to open inbox. Notifier should use existing username passwords and login automatically when you "open Inbox" or compose "new message".
Now notification window interval can be stopped and you can navigate (next/previous) to different email messages.

Gmail Notifier for Google Apps (Multiple accounts) beta released!

Thanks very much to all of you for your support, suggestions and patience. Today, i have released the beta version of Gmail Notifier for Google Apps (multiple account). Although it developed it early this year but could not get time to test and release it. I have named it as "Sohail's Gmail Notifier for Google Apps(Multiple accounts)", version 1.1.0.0

Here are some of the new functionalities that i have added

Gmail Notifier for Google Apps with Vista 64 bit Suppport

I have noticed that some users are still could not get proper version installed for Vista 64 bit.
Please make sure that you download and install the version which says "Sohail's Gmail Notifier Google Apps - Vista SP1 & 64bit" If you find any problems after installation, please run this program "as administrator". It should work by doing that. Vista 64 bit is more secure OS than 32 bit so this program throws error if it could not get the access to registry.

Vista SP1 setup uploaded

I have uploaded a setup file for Vista SP1 today, it should also work with Vista 64 bit,XP & 2000. Users might need to run this program as an administrator to get all functionalities working. Please report me the issues you face.

Free version is no longer supported!

Thanks very much all of you who used free version of this notifier and sent me suggestions for new features. As I am working on professional version & multiple accounts features these days, free version of notifier is not longer supported.

You can still send me your suggestions & feature requests, I will try to add them in ASAP. As license agreement of free version prohibits its distribution without our written permission but those who have already got it installed can still continue using it.

More new functionalities in Professional Version...

Thanks guys for your support and suggestions. Few more functionalities have been added to Gmail Notifier from feature requests.

First of them is moving pop up screen to a desired screen so that i won't appear in the right bottom corner all the time.You just need to click on the "move" button and drag notifier to a different position and it will automatically show up next time on new location.

There is an option in "Options" window to set it back to default location.

Second: Transparency option have been added to notifier to make it look more neat and clean. You can set transparency level from "Options".

Third : Now, If you click on email summary of notifier. It will open up that email conversation straight into your default browser providing that you have saved your Google Apps username and password in the browser.

Old customers can download the setup file again and install this version.
All previous licenses should work. In case of any problems please let me know.

Sorry, multiple accounts were not added in professional release 1.01.1.

I am writing a new notifier to handle multiple Google Apps accounts. Essential part is completed but still adding some nice to have features as well. Hoping to release a beta in next few days after testing. If you have any requirements please send them to me so that i can add them in.

Professional Version is now available!

hmm.........
I know some of you have been waiting for proxy settings & mailto support for quite a long time. Sorry for the delays guys. I have released Professional Version which is now capable of handling mailto links. This version should also run under proxy server. I think I have done enough testing before release. If you guys find any bugs please report back to me and i will try to fix them ASAP.

I will be adding more ideas into it as soon as i get them in my mind :) or i get them from you. Please do not hesitate to send me your wishes/requirements.

A small bug in professional release was found for windows vista, where it was not opening up links in system's default browser. This has been fixed now and i have replace the old setup file with the new one.

New Beta version released with proxy & mailto support!

New beta version is released today. Thanks very much all of you for your suggestions & feedback. Please evaluate this version and let me know if everything is working alright. After getting comments on new functionalities, i will be releasing another version which will support multiple accounts as well.

Multiple gmail accounts feature (Free or Costly)?

After releasing Gmail Notifier version 1.0.0.5 I received many emails requesting more functionalities. Some of the emails said that i can even set a price for notifier after adding those functionalities.

Now that i am going to release new beta version with more functionalities like

-Proxy support
-Use notifier as default Mailto program
-check email interval reduced to seconds

I just wanna to get an idea, if i also add "multiple gmail accounts support" onto it; should there be a price for this application ?
If yes then how much should it be?

Thanks for downloading Gmail Notifier, After getting lots of requests i spared some time to add more functionalities into it. Deveoplemnt of Gmail Notifier Version 1.0.0.9 (Beta) is near to complete and then i will test it for few days. Hopefully it will be available very soon.

Notifier got listed onto Google Apps Solutions Gallery

New version with requested features

Hi friends,

Thanks for your support and using notifier application, as i have already discussed what happened to my application when it came to google. Anyway for me adding a word in app name doesn't matter.

Today, i have uploaded new version of app with all the requested features.
Now you can save user settings and passwords independently, it wont disturb anything if you open it with a different windows account.
Another new feature includes sound settings. You can mute notifier sound if you dont like it as well as you can change it.

Change in application name

Hi friends,

I know it is bit surprising to change application name, although i was loving its old name "Gmail Notifier for Google Apps".

From today i will be calling this application "Sohail's Gmail Notifier for Google Apps". The reason why i changed its name is, i contacted Google for hosting this application in Google's Enterprise Solutions. They tested the application and decided to add it in Google Apps Solutions but then they sent me an email saying that there has been some backlash in Google with my product title, "Gmail Notifier for Google Apps" and the confusion it may create with Google's Gmail Notifier.

By changing its name to "Sohail's Gmail Notifier for Google Apps", i hope there is no issue left.

Is it safe to use Gmail Notifier ?

i really want to appreciate Savcic Viktor because he raised this question "Is it safe to use Gmail Notifier ?". Viktor's question gave me an chance of posting a blog about gmail notifier's security.

ok, now i am going to show how it is safe to use gmail notifier, first you guys need to visit this link please http://gmailnotifier.net/photos/apprelated/default.aspx, you can find two images in there. One of which shows zone alarm firewall alert saying that your notifier is trying to connect to 64.233.163.18, and if you notice it will also be showing you the protocol "HTTPS". hmmm , now we know this application is connecting to some ip 64.233... on HTTPS protocol. Now what we need to know is where this ip belongs to? Second image on the same link is proving that this IP belongs to google. i think this is enough to prove notifier's security. You can also run same experiment with different firewall and DNS queries. If you are still unsure about what it's doing then you can run a packet sniffer and see what's going on ?

If you wanna to know any other aspect of security, please raise a thread in forum.

Gmail Notifier version 1.0 release

Starting from google Apps, i was very happy when i came to know about google apps for the first time. i registered many of my domains with google apps. Even though gmail was doing very well for me but having a gmail interface and storage on your own domain was something really very amazing.

I remember posting an email to google suggesting them to add a service so that i could use my personal email with gmail interface. i know many of gmail users would have been suggesting the same thing and finally the day came when google announced about google apps.

Few days after registering i found that i can't use gmail notifier(Google) with my hosted domain. That wasn't a pleasant surprise for me. Then i started searching google apps help but all i could find was to use Google talk as an email notifier.

Then i thought of gmail APIs for a while but couldn't come to a solution. Then i found somewhere on the internet that i could connect to Gmail RSS programmatically...... hmmmm ........ v nice. i thought i should make a gmail notifier myself.

Now i thought i am only an ASP.NET developer and didn't work much with Windows applications, but again google search helped me in all stages of my development.

That's it. Today i got some time to upload/share my application with all of you and i am done.

I hope you guys will give me suggestions in developing next version. Waiting for all of you. Thanks very much!!!
